It can be easy to let your biking habit slack off in the winter. Even if you don’t live in a cold snowy climate, the short days make it harder to get out on the roads and stay safe. Fear not… we’re watching out for your safety.
Just find someone gadgety to make some of these happy face-shaped LED bicycle lights for your tires.
Alas, you can’t buy them on the street yet–these ones were custom made and sold at an auction for £2000, but if you are handy, perhaps you could check out the pictures on the “Joyrider” page and figure out how to make some of your own.
If you start working out with a personal trainer and you’re trying to lose a few (okay, more than a few) pounds, the first thing that trainer will probably tell you to do is keep a diet journal. Write down everything you eat and carry that list with you. How… low tech.
Wouldn’t you rather type your munchies into a digital calorie counter? One that doesn’t just keep track of your entries but that also offers calorie estimates for over 50,000 foods, including information from over 250 restaurants and 500 popular food brands? One that is programmed to help you keep track of–and progress toward–your fitness goals? One that can be hooked up to your computer so you can download your information to a central place?
Sure, you would. Notebooks are way too Little House on the Prairie. Get with the modern age and pick up a digital calorie counter if you’re trying to lose weight.
The model shown here is the CalorieSmart Handheld Calorie Counter and is available at Amazon for less than $100:
Push ups are just about the simplest exercise you can do, and you can do them without any fitness equipment, but could you do them better if you invested in some gadgetry?
Some people swear by push up bars (which allow a deeper, fuller push up), while others say there’s more potential for injury by going past 90 degrees with your arms. Whatever camp you’re in, you may still get a kick out of the fact that there are such things as digital push up bars.
Some of the features of these bars are:
- an ergonomic design with big LCD screen
- simple one-key operation
- automated repetition counting (hey, you wouldn’t want to have to count for yourself!)
- workout effort measurement (get told when you’re slacking off!)
- average workout power monitoring
They’re made by a Chinese company, and I’m not quite sure where you can buy them, so if anyone knows, please leave a comment below!
Just how fast did you zoom down that slope anyway? You’ve always thought you were faster than lightning, but now you can know for sure with a wrist speedometer. This is a must-have gadget for anyone who prides themselves on speed on the slopes!
The Silva S1 Speedometer is specifically made for Nordic and alpine skiers and snowboarders.
“Utilizing advanced radar technology, the speedometer calculates your speed and distance and wirelessly transmits all the information to the versatile receiver which can be worn via a carabiner, wrist band or lanyard.” It measures ground speed in miles per hour as well as distance traveled.
Other features for the ski speedometer include a 7 day internal performance logbook, time/date/alarm clock (so basically it can replace your watch), and a light so you can even get your speeds during night skiing and snowboarding. There’s even an optional heart-rate-monitor accessory you can get (great if you’re a cross-country skier and you’re out there for a workout!).
The ski gadget is on sale for $265 (down from $400) at Amazon right now:
If you take a trip to Mexico or Hawaii, you can go on a cruise in a boat with a glass bottom, which allows you to see the tropical fish. Well, now you can see the fish (and everything else beneath you), no matter where you go.
This transparent canoe-kayak hybrid has a “transparent polymer hull that offers paddlers an underwater vista of aquatic wildlife and waterscapes unavailable in conventional boats.”
The craft seats two people, and the hull, though it looks delicate, is actually made from the same durable material found in the cockpit canopies of supersonic fighter jets. It ought to survive any dings and scrapes against rocks you might encounter.
The canoe-kayak is supposed to be easy to maneuver, since it displaces a larger amount of water than typical, which provides more surface stability. The paddlers are also seated lower to the deck to give you better balance.
Sounds like a pretty sweet aquatic ride, but it’ll cost you…

If you’ve been to a gym any time in the last 30 years, you’ve probably seen a rowing machine. But I bet you haven’t seen one of these:
The Vasa Ergometer Swim Bench lets you workout your swimming strokes without getting wet.
Swimming pools are fun and all, but not many of us have room (or can afford) dedicated lap pools in our home. While the Vasa Swim Bench isn’t exactly cheap ($1899), it’s a lot more compact and may be more practical for more folks. Also, you don’t have to put chemicals in it or clean leaves out of the gutters.
“The Vasa Ergometer is the perfect tool to increase specific stroke power, stamina and speed for kayak, canoe and Dragon boat paddling. The versatile Vasa Trainer is the athletes total gym, designed to build sport specific strength, power, plyometric jumping power, and injury prevention or rehabilitation by using body weight as resistance.”

If golf is part of your exercise routine, you probably don’t want to make use of the golf carts. A stroll along the greens is good for you, but toting your clubs over your shoulder may be more of a workout than you’re looking for! After all, it’s hard to line up those putts with sweat dripping in your eyes…
Here’s a solution that lets you walk but takes the burden off your back: the Bag Boy Automatic Push Cart.
“The Automatic is the only push cart with one-step fold in golf. It is equipped with Bag Boy’s new G-Force Performance 3-wheel design, fully adjustable bag brackets to accommodate various bag types (including junior bags), an adjustment mechanism for perfect front wheel alignment, a detachable swivel beverage holster, a telescoping handle and a handle-mounted parking brake.”
Hey, what kind of gadget would it be if nothing “telescoped”?
