Vasacor for lowering cholesterolI’m reading Protein Power right now, a book that promotes the same kind of origin diet (only eating meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, and seeds) as Paleo Diet, Neanderthin, Dangerous Grains, and others of that ilk. The fourth chapter is on cholesterol, and the book discusses how eliminating grains, dairy, sugar, and salt can vastly improve overall health and lower cholesterol.

I’m a big proponent of this kind of diet (I follow it myself), but even the MDs who wrote Protein Power admit that sometimes you need a drug to help with cholesterol issues. And of course not everybody is willing to embrace a strict Paleolithic diet. That’s when you usually have to look to prescription drugs. However, if you’re not ready to succumb to the expenses of a prescription, you could try a supplement such as Vasacor*.

The supplement is available without a prescription and, according to the company, is a safer alternative to statin drugs. It also comes with a 90-day guarantee, so you could try it for long enough to see if affects your cholesterol.

It’s no joke that health care is expensive (especially if you’re self-employed like I am, and you have to foot the entire bill yourself), so I was interested to find out about Vimo - Comparison Shopping for Health*. It’s a web site that lets you punch in your zip code and get a list of all the doctors and insurers covering your area. You can easily comparison shop for different insurance policies, checking out which ones offer how much coverage and the bottom line of how much each would cost you per month. They also let you look up dentists and dental coverage. I’m going to be moving in a few months, so this is definitely something I’m going to check out when I get into a new area.

You can read health care news about the company online. Or, if you want to win a free t-shirt (or simply have time on your hands), you can review your doctor. The data will be used to give people more information when they’re considering a doctor in your area. All in all, Vimo looks like it’s going to be a good resource, especially for the self-employed and for small businesses.

alcohol rehabA big part of staying fit and healthy is only putting good foods and plenty of water into your body. If you’re quaffing down alcohol on a regular basis, then you’re not doing yourself any favors. Not only is it empty calories, but it puts an extra strain on your body, as your system attempts to detoxify itself. While an occasional drink may be okay for some, in order to enjoy a healthy long life, you need to avoid abusing alcohol. Easier said than done though. Fortunately, there are rehabilitation clinics that can help.

Passages Malibu is a renowned Drug and Alcohol Rehab in California. Even if you’re not local to California, you can pick up some useful information on their site. Whether this is for you or for a loved one, the best way to fight a drug or alcohol addiction is by arming yourself with knowledge and by getting help from others.

At drug rehab clinics, such as Passages Malibu, you receive individualized treatment programs that offer one-on-one therapy sessions as well as psychotherapy, which helps you figure out why you’re turning to drugs or alcohol in the first place. You can read more about their drug and alcohol rehab treatment therapies on their site.

kneeler chairI don’t know about the rest of you, but I hardly ever get injured working out (okay, okay, I get some impressive bruises from karate). Granted, I’ll have some soreness after a hard weight-lifting workout, but what really smashes my body is sitting in a chair at the computer all day. The human form wasn’t meant to sit all day, hacking at a keyboard and squinting at a monitor. We were built to chase down mammoths and things out in the wilds. Sitting all day may be okay when you’re young, but when you get older, your body rebels at this captivity. You get back pains, headaches, tense shoulders, etc. etc. etc. But what can you do? You gotta earn a living. Well, you can check out some of the new ergonomic chairs on the market. One example is this kneeler chair.

It’s a little different than your average Herman Miller type chair. For one thing, there’s no back, no arm rests, none of the normal attributes one expects from a chair. But maybe that’s what makes it work (I haven’t tried one, so I don’t know if they really do work, but that’s what the makers claim). Your weight actually rests, in part, on your knees. This is supposed to take some of the pressure off your coccyx (yes, Virginia, there is a coccyx… it’s fancy medical code for tailbone) and relieve lower back pain.
