If you’re into hiking, sailing, or just heading off into parts unknown, you’re a prime candidate for a GPS unit. There are tons of options out there, so how do you know what’s best? Garmin is one of the best-known makers of GPS units, but do they hold up to user reviews?
Well, Business Week took a look at several models this week, and they voted the Garmin GPSMap 60cx as their favorite pick. They had far more pros (”the next-generation 60cx… has outstanding satellite reception, thanks to an extended antenna. The highly durable, waterproof case also fits neatly in the palm of your hand, while the buttons are configured to work equally well for righties and lefties”) than they had cons (”the software isn’t entirely intuitive”). The review recommended you buy the Garmin unit if “versatility is important to you. The 60cx works great in the city, on hiking trails, and even at sea”).
User-submitted reviews over at Amazon are positive too. You can purchase the GPS unit there for about $350 (there was a rebate when I visited, so it’s even cheaper): Garmin GPSMap 60Cx Handheld GPS Navigator
If part of your evening exercise routine is to take your dog for a walk, you might want to look into reflective clothing for yourself (after all, motorists have a hard time seeing walkers after dark) and maybe a little something for Fido. How about a reflective dog leash? Put out by GlowDog, these leashes glow-in-the-dark, so motorists will have a better chance of seeing you and your dog when you cross the street or walk places without sidewalks. Prices range from $12.95 to $15.95, depending on the width of the leash you want, and they’re available in numerous colors.
