underwater-pogo-stick-2I’m not sure you can show up to an open swim with an underwater pogo stick, but if you’ve got a backyard pool, this could make exercising in it a little more fun. At the very least, it looks more exciting than water aerobics!

“This is the only pogo stick designed for use in swimming pools that allows you to perform a variety of waterborne stunts as you bounce off walls or bottoms. A rigid ball filled with water fits into the non-slip footrest, providing responsive push-off when compressed against a pool’s floor with your body weight, enabling you to splash effortlessly in shallower water and bound powerfully through deeper water.”

I would have loved something like this as a kid. Okay, okay, I’d love to play exercise with something like this now. Alas, my backyard did not come with a pool. Maybe I could try it out at the pool at the gym during a slow period…

If you’re interested, you can get the underwater pogo stick for a surprisingly reasonable $60 through Hammacher Schlemmer:

If you take a trip to Mexico or Hawaii, you can go on a cruise in a boat with a glass bottom, which allows you to see the tropical fish. Well, now you can see the fish (and everything else beneath you), no matter where you go.

This transparent canoe-kayak hybrid has a “transparent polymer hull that offers paddlers an underwater vista of aquatic wildlife and waterscapes unavailable in conventional boats.”

The craft seats two people, and the hull, though it looks delicate, is actually made from the same durable material found in the cockpit canopies of supersonic fighter jets. It ought to survive any dings and scrapes against rocks you might encounter.

The canoe-kayak is supposed to be easy to maneuver, since it displaces a larger amount of water than typical, which provides more surface stability. The paddlers are also seated lower to the deck to give you better balance.

Sounds like a pretty sweet aquatic ride, but it’ll cost you…

digital fish scaleWell, I’m not sure I’d call fishing “fitness” exactly, but I found this portable, digital fish scale and thought it might make a good Christma gift for someone, so I’m going to go ahead and write about it. This is for the fisherman (or fisher woman) who wants to know right away whether that catch is worth taking home or needs to be tossed back.

The portable scale is lightweight, waterproof, and buoyant, so it’s no problem if it falls in the water. The LCD screen gives you the weight of your fish (up to 25 pounds), and the scale “remembers” the 5 heaviest fish, so you can prove to friends just how big your biggest catch was (as long as you don’t cheat and weigh some old boots or something…)

Available from RedEnvelope, the scale costs $90.

sunglasses for surfersYou’re not surfing without sunglasses, are you? If you live the outdoor lifestyle, it can be damaging to your eyes over time, and the sun is even more intense when you’re out on the water. Sunglasses can certainly help but, if you’re surfing or doing some other water sport that’s likely to send you plunging into the surf, you need something that’s going to hang on. These Sea Specs, advertised as “extreme surf sunglasses,” are designed to stay on your head, hold up to constant water use, and (important!) still make you look cool. They’re available online for a very reasonable $59.
